What we do...
The club was formed in the 1960s and was one of the earliest clubs to join the Sub Aqua Association (we are SAA club number 32). In 2009 we have about fifteen members, including several families. We are family friendly and several of the members' children have learnt to dive with the club. Typically age ranges in the swimming pool on a Thursday night run from under five to over seventy.
As well as age we also have a wide range of experience within the club; some still working towards the club diver qualification and some with instructor qualifications, perhaps having done many hundreds of dives.
During the winter months we train weekly in a swimming pool and try and make regular trips to local open-water sites (normally flooded quarries - see links page) for open-water practice.
During the summer we do as much diving around Pembrokeshire as possible, typically launching our boats out of Milford Haven or Little Haven to dive at locations such as Stack Rocks and around Skomer and Skokholm islands.
The Dolphins own two rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) which are permanently based in Pembrokeshire. Both boats carry VHF radios, safety kit and emergency oxygen.
Pembrokeshire diving is typically a mixture of reef dives (ie rocky slopes and gullies), drift dives (being carried along by the current past the underwater scenery), wall dives (diving down underwater cliffs) and wrecks (such as The Lucy and 'The Greek'). Depths can be anything from a few meters down to forty meters plus.
Some members also go on weekend trips on hardboats off the south coast.
Much of our training and diving is done with members of Cardiff Underwater (another SAA club) with whom we can split costs and share skills.
